The President of Britain's Supreme Court, Lord Robert Reed, announces the court's ruling that the Scottish Parliament cannot unilaterally legislate for a referendum on Scottish independence without the backing of the Westminster-based government of the United Kingdom, in a set-back for the Scottish National Party and those supporting a repeat of the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Missouri's attorney general Eric Schmitt announces that his state will be the first "to effectively end abortion" in the United States, after the conservative-dominated Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 "Roe v. Wade" decision that enshrined a woman's right to an abortion, saying that individual states can now permit or restrict the procedure themselves. "I pledge to continue to fight for our most fundamental right: the right to life," Schmitt says in a video statement posted to social media. SOUNDBITE
Britain's Supreme Court rules that Europe's busiest airport Heathrow can build a third runway, overturning a legal decision to block the plan on environmental grounds. Britain's highest court struck down February's Court of Appeal ruling that the UK government had failed to take into account climate change commitments when it approved the new runway in 2018.
