Protesters come out for the seventeenth consecutive day in Minsk, against President Alexander Lukashenko's disputed re-election. On Sunday 23 August 2020, tens of thousands took part in some of the largest protests in the country's recent history for a second Sunday in a row. Demonstrators have daily flooded the streets of the former Soviet country demanding the resignation of authoritarian leader Lukashenko since he claimed a sixth term in disputed elections on August 9.     Around twenty people demonstrating against the disputed reelection of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko are arrested during a protest attended by roughly 1,000 people on Minsk's Independence Square, which has been the scene of unprecedented anti-government demonstrations in recent weeks. Since the August 9 election, mass demonstrations have pushed back against Lukashenko's claim to have won 80 percent of the vote and yet another term as president after 26 years in power.
