The President of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkir says the "overdue ceasefire" in Gaza is "reassuring" after Israel and Hamas, the Islamists who control Gaza, announced a ceasefire aimed to close 11 days of deadly fighting that pounded the Palestinian enclave and forced countless Israelis to seek shelter from rockets. The UN Security Council for the first time demands a ceasefire in Gaza, with the United States which has vetoed previous bids, abstaining. The resolution, which demands an "immediate ceasefire" for the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramadan that leads to a "lasting" truce, went through, with all other 14 Security Council members voting yes. The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly adopts a resolution that "demands" Russia "immediately" withdraw from Ukraine, in a powerful rebuke of Moscow's invasion by the global body charged with peace and security.
