Berlin's Sacred Heart Church rings its bells in honour of the funeral of former pope Benedict XVI, who was Germany's first pope in 1,000 years. IMAGES
Mass is held in the cathedral in the city of Regensburg, where the late former pope Benedict XVI taught at the university between 1969 and 1977 and came back regularly to visit his brother, the leader of the cathedral choir. Benedict, who passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 95, had shocked the world in 2013 when he became the first pope since the Middle Ages to step down, citing his declining mental and physical health. Ex-pope Benedict XVI's coffin is carried into St Peter's Basilica, following a funeral at the Vatican led by Pope Francis and attended by tens of thousands of mourners. The remains of the German Joseph Ratzinger, who was the first pontiff to retire since the Middle Ages, will be buried in the tomb under the Basilica which previously held the body of John Paul II.
