The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party celebrates its surge after elections in two eastern states. In Saxony, the anti-immigration AfD scored 27.5 percent, up sharply from 9.7 percent five years ago, broadcasters ARD and ZDF forecast. EU lawmakers overwhelmingly vote to give conservative Maltese politician Roberta Metsola another term as speaker of the European Parliament. Metsola wins a massive majority with 562 votes as the 720-seat parliament met for its first session in Strasbourg, France, with new MEPs. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad casts his vote in Syria's fourth parliamentary election since the civil war erupted in 2011, a poll expected to keep his ruling Baath party in power. More than 1,500 people are standing for 250 seats in the largely rubber-stamp parliament, after some 7,400 candidates withdrew in recent days, according to Syria's Supreme Judicial Elections Committee.
