Thousands of migrants were rescued by an international flotilla on Saturday and Sunday while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach the coasts of Europe from North Africa.
A group of 73 migrants mainly from Bangladesh are rescued by an Italian Guardia di Finanza vessel in the Mediterranean sea and brought to Lampedusa. More than 1,400 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa at the weekend, sparking calls from far-right politicians for action to stem the flow, amid fresh moves by Italian authorities against the rescue boats who operate in the central Mediterranean. On board the Ocean Viking, off the shores of southern Europe, tension is mounting among migrants rescued at sea. Some 118 of them fled Libya and were rescued five days ago by the SOS Méditerranée aid ship, which is circling waiting to be assigned a port of disembarkation. IMAGES
