The extreme heat in the northern hemisphere is putting an increasing strain on healthcare systems, hitting hardest those least able to manage its consequences, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says during a weekly virtual briefing. "Extreme heat puts increased pressure on health systems. Exposure to excessive heat has wide-ranging impacts on health, often amplifying existing conditions and resulting in premature death," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells journalists. UN head Antonio Guterres warns that humanity is "just one miscalculation away from nuclear annihilation," with the world facing a threat "not seen since the height of the Cold War." Guterres opens the start of a conference of countries belonging to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by saying, "we have been extraordinarily lucky so far. But luck is not a strategy. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen warns against imposing unilateral travel restrictions to fight the coronavirus epidemic, as some member states have done. A first delivery of mpox vaccines is expected to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the coming days, the World Health Organization's chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says during a UN press briefing in Geneva. The WHO declared an international emergency over mpox on August 14, concerned by the surge in cases of a new strain, the Clade 1b, in the DR Congo and its spread to nearby countries. SOUNDBITE
