The Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of an mpox outbreak, receives its first vaccines -- almost half of 200,000 doses donated by the European Union and due to arrive by the end of the week to fight its spread. IMAGES
A first delivery of mpox vaccines is expected to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the coming days, the World Health Organization's chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says during a UN press briefing in Geneva. The WHO declared an international emergency over mpox on August 14, concerned by the surge in cases of a new strain, the Clade 1b, in the DR Congo and its spread to nearby countries. SOUNDBITE
"Shops, certain cultural and sporting activities, and (cafe) terraces" could reopen "around mid-May" in France depending on the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, Prime Minister Jean Castex says. SOUNDBITE
Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé announces during a press conference in Montreal that the first vaccination took place in Quebec this morning: "In our St Antoine retirement home, a woman named Gisèle Lévesque was vaccinated at proximately 11:30 this morning." SOUNDBITE
The World Health Organization (WHO) says it will send more than one million polio vaccines to war-torn Gaza after the virus was detected in wastewater there. The UN agency's chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adds that the vaccines "will be administered in the coming weeks". SOUNDBITE
