Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral gets a new golden rooster, part of its renaissance from the ashes of the 2019 fire that severely damaged it, and ahead of its reopening next year. The artefact was blessed by the archbishop of Paris Laurent Ulrich before being lifted into place on the cathedral spire 96 metres (104 yards) high, in blue skies and winter sunshine. IMAGES
An ornate cross is lifted by crane and installed on the new spire of Paris' emblematic Notre-Dame cathedral. Workers have one year, starting on Friday, to finish restoring the gothic monument in time for its reopening following a monstrous fire in 2019. IMAGES
The outline of the new spire on the Notre-Dame Cathedral was visible on the Paris skyline as a key part of the reconstruction from a devastating fire approached completion. Carpenters at Paris Notre Dame Cathedral cheer as the last dowel is hammered in its wooden frame structure rebuilt identically to the original medieval-age one. Following the tradition, a bouquet made up from a branch coming from one of trees used in the reconstruction project is placed at the top of the choir frame, marking the end of this rebuilding stage. Notre Dame was ravaged by fire on 15 April 2019 and is due to reopen in less than a year. IMAGES
