Police charged the suspect, identified as 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula in local media, with attempted murder Thursday. Cintula had been living in one of these flats for around forty years, according to a neighbour. Authorities have charged an alleged gunman with the attempted murder of the 59-year-old leader, saying the shooting was sparked by the election win last month of a Fico ally. SOUNDBITE
Media crews set up outside the hospital in Banska Bystrica where Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is staying the day after he was shot multiple times while leaving a meeting. According to a statement from the country's deputy prime minister, Fico's condition has stabilised but remains "very serious".
