Russian director Yevgeniya Berkovich and writer Svetlana Petriychuk appear in a Russian military court, where they were sentenced to six years in prison for "justifying terrorism" in a 2021 play about women marrying jihadists in Syria. The trial of a French researcher accused of violating Russia's "foreign agent" law begins in Moscow amid simmering tensions with Paris over Ukraine. Laurent Vinatier, who worked on conflict mediation for a Swiss NGO and was arrested in June, appears in a glass cage for defendants at Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky court as the trial opens. Darya Trepova, a 26-year-old accused of killing a military blogger and supporter of Moscow's Ukraine offensive, appears in court for her case's first hearing. Russian investigators say Ukraine orchestrated the attack on Vladlen Tatarsky, which took place at a cafe in Saint Petersburg in April. Trepova is alleged to have gifted Tatarsky a statuette, which exploded minutes later, killing the blogger and wounding more than 30 others. Four men accused of murdering 298 people in the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014 went on trial in the Netherlands, with a judge saying it was an "atrocious disaster".
