Almost all opposition candidates in Madagascar have called on voters to shun a presidential election scheduled for November 16, raising concerns about the vote. "We reject this Thursday's election and ask the Malagasy people to pretend it doesn't exist," Hajo Andrianainarivelo, 56, tells a press conference in Antananarivo, speaking on behalf of a group bringing together almost all of the 12 opposition candidates in the running. Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga calls off demonstrations planned for Monday and said his party would sit down for dialogue with the government after two weeks of protests. "We stand down our demonstrations for Monday, that is tomorrow, April 3, 2023. But in doing so, we want to emphasise that the right to assemble, to demonstrate, petition, and speak are iron-clad as provided for in our constitution," the veteran opposition leader tells reporters. Raila Odinga and Martha Karua arrive at the Supreme Court to file a hard copy of their petition challenging the presidential election results after having filed an online petition. Odinga has rejected the outcome of the poll, branding it a "travesty." He narrowly lost to Ruto by around 230,000 votes, less than two percentage points. IMAGES
"The results (...) declared and announced by Mr. Wafula Chebukati (...) do not represent the declaration and announcement by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission," says IEBC vice chair Juliana Cherera.
